Airborne-Unmanned 06.11.19: Drone Safety, Chute Waiver, Honeywell Fly-By-Wire

Acting FAA Administrator Daniel Elwell announced National Drone Safety Awareness Week, a planned series of nationwide events focused on the safe operation of drones, at the UAS Symposium held last week in Baltimore, MD.

"We want everyone in on the conversation," he said. AUVSI will be a key partner in the week, including through Know Before You Fly, the public education campaign started by AUVSI, the Academy of Model Aeronautics and the FAA. "We're thinking outside the box," Elwell said. "We want to be more than the regulator" and to be an enabler. The FAA has issued Hensel Phelps Construction Company of Washington, D.C., a Part 107 waiver to operate a DJI Phantom 4 drone, equipped with a parachute, over people. A waiver is required to operate a drone contrary to the rules in part 107. The FAA did not certify or approve the parachute that will be used; however, the FAA determined that the waiver application sufficiently met the standard design specification (ASTM 3322-18) and that the proposed sUAS operation could be safely conducted under the terms and conditions of a waiver. Honeywell has unveiled a new compact "fly-by-wire" system that is approximately the size of a paperback book. The computer packs the "brains" of an airliner's flight controls into one system, and is the next step towards autonomous and Urban Air Mobility vehicles. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne-Unmanned!!!
