ANN News Editor Tom Patton spent some time talking with Chris Holder of Concorde Battery while at EAA AirVenture 2013.
Tom expressed his concern that general aviation pilots are not flying as much, and this is hard on batteries. He asked Chris what he recommended.
Chris recommended one approach is to remove the battery from the aircraft if it’s going to be stored for a long period. He told us to the keep the battery in a cool place for storage and explains why a sealed lead acid battery stores better when it’s cool.
Another choice for keeping your battery charged and ready to go is to use a float charger. But be careful; don’t use a float charger that you would find at an automotive supply store because they’re made for car batteries and airplane lead/acid batteries are different. With the wrong float charger it’s possible to damage your battery. In this video, Chris explains the details.
