Airborne 07.03.19: Gulfstream G600 Cert, USAF Drafts Pipistrel, SPA Panther

Also: P-40 Withdraws From Reno, Hartzell Engine Technologies, F/A-18 Performances Cancelled?, Ryan ST Kits

The FAA has awarded type and production certificates to Gulfstream for new G600 business jet, clearing the way for the first completed G600 deliveries to customers as scheduled this year.

"Getting both authorizations on the same day is evidence of the maturity of our G600 production processes and speaks to the safety and reliability of the aircraft's design," said Gulfstream president Mark Burns. The award-winning G600 is the third Gulfstream aircraft model to get its type and production certificates simultaneously. The first was the Gulfstream G550 on Aug. 14, 2003. The clean-sheet Gulfstream G500 duplicated the feat July 20, 2018. The US Air Force has selected Tomorrow's Aeronautical Museum in Compton, CA as the primary contractor for its Aviation-Character-Education (A.C.E.) Solo Flight Program. The program is "an inclusive, comprehensive, and low-cost solution to address the “warfighting imperative” of increased diversity and pilot shortage through deliberate development of the next generation of USAF officers prior to and shortly after commissioning." The FAA's National Kit Evaluation Team (NKET) recently completed an on-site evaluation of the Sport Performance Aviation LLC Panther program, and has added the airplane to its approved kit list. In its evaluation, it was determined that the kit may allow an amateur builder to meet the major portion requirement for assembly as prescribed by Federal Aviation Regulations. The inspection included all models and upgrade options available at this time from SPA. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
