ANN Special Report: John Hovan On Closing Opa-Locka West 05.26.06
The folks who run Florida's Miami International Airport are hungry for cash... and they think they've found an answer: turn the Opa-locka West airport into a limerock mine. Officials at the airport say the small two-runway airport -- which has been closed since Hurricane Wilma last year -- is rarely used, and is far more valuable as a source for minerals needed to make concrete and roadfill, especially as a federal judge looks at Florida's current source of the material, the so-called "Lake Belt", for possible environmental impact violations. If the Lake Belt goes, the land Opa-locka West currently occupies becomes very valuable -- and that, said the Opa-locka Airport Association in a recent letter to the FAA -- could be why Opa-locka West has fallen into a state of, as the group calls it -- "intentional neglect." Closing Opa-locka West would also mean the loss of the only open North-South runway in the county -- as runway 18/36 at the Opa-locka main airport, 10 miles away, has been closed by the placement of a temporary tower nearby. John Hovan is a member of the EAA's ultralight council... and president of the South Florida Fun Flyers. He spoke late Thursday with ANN's Jim Campbell.
