There's a new player in the increasingly crowded medium-lift
military transport game. In a ceremony held Tuesday during the
seventh edition of the Latin America Aero and Defence (LAAD) trade
fair, Embraer signed a contract with the Brazilian Air Force (FAB)
for the turbofan-powered KC-390 military transport aircraft
program.
When you're royalty, your every action is held up to public
scrutiny (at least, so we hear -- Ed.) As
we approach the one-year anniversary since Britain's Prince William
landed a military helicopter in his girlfriend's
backyard, now comes word the budding search-and-rescue
pilot also "overcooked" the engine on a fixed-wing training
aircraft last year.
"This is the time to make the transition from F-22 to F-35
production." With that statement -- written Monday by Air Force Secretary
Michael Donley and General Norton Schwartz, the service's top
uniformed officer, in an op-ed piece in the Washington
Post --- supporters of the top-of-the-line F-22 Raptor
lost two key proponents in keeping production of the advanced
fighter aircraft going.

It's been just over a week since US Defense Secretary Robert
gates
broke the news that F-22 Raptor production will end in
2011. Federal lawmakers have met with unions to
discuss strategy, defense contractors have had their communications
folks working late, and the letter-writing campaigns are up and
running.
Officials from the 97th Air Mobility Wing at Altus Air Force
Base welcomed the 5th district congresswoman of Oklahoma April 9 as
she toured the base for her assessment of the state's military
readiness.
