Cost-Cutting Measures Will Result In Reduced Schedules
The Pentagon has released the news that the Blue Angels, Thunderbirds and other military outreach programs will resume next year... but within certain limits. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel outlined the Pentagon’s new strategic approach to community outreach in an internal memorandum to service chiefs and other military leaders just before the weekend. Many activities, including the Blue Angels and Thunderbirds air demonstration teams, will resume, but at a more limited frequency than in previous years. This cost-cutting measure will yield a savings of $104 million in fiscal year 2014.
First S-70i Helos With Terrain Awareness And Warning Capability
The Colombian Army has taken delivery of two Sikorsky S-70i Black Hawk helicopters incorporating a Helicopter Terrain Awareness and Warning System (HTAWS) as standard equipment. Colombia is the first country to field S-70i helicopters equipped with HTAWS, which Sikorsky has customized for the unique requirements of the combat assault and utility missions.

CENTCOM released a Military Utility Assessment (MUA) report Sept. 27 which serves as the official document of the fixed wing (FW) tests’ outcome, confirming weapon performance and minimizing safety of flight concerns. The MUA is another step toward a follow-on FW Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System (APKWS) addition to the current Program of Record.

State-of-the-art RAF Typhoons and French Air Force Mirages were involved in the air component of Exercise Joint Warrior, a twice-yearly, multinational, tri-service military exercise, one of the biggest of its kind in Europe. This year is the first time it has been commanded by a joint team of French and British air commanders, a move that paves the way for continued co-operation and training at a high strategic level.
