The feeding frenzy and guess work over Air France 447 has
reached a pretty high-pitch... so much so that we're loathe to add
to the mix with anything more than a "just the facts" approach.
The Defense Department is flying a 19-person crew and Navy
equipment to Natal, Brazil, to aid in the search for Air France
Flight 447's data recorders, according to the Pentagon. The Airbus
A330 jetliner with 228 people aboard disappeared May 31 in
thunderstorms while traveling from Rio de Janeiro to Paris.
192 countries meeting at the UN climate talks in Bonn, Germany,
have proposed a fee to be levied on international flight tickets as
well as shipping that would be earmarked for fighting climate
change. It's estimated the fee, proposed by the 50 wealthiest
countries, could raise as much as $10 billion a year while raising
ticket prices less than 1%, according to the attendees.
A 26-foot-long French submarine is being rushed to the likely
site where Air France Flight 447 impacted the Atlantic Ocean a week
ago, in hopes of locating the Airbus A330's cockpit voice and
flight data recorders. Finding the black boxes is crucial to
determining the cause of the in-flight breakup of the aircraft.
Fort Lauderdale Based Gulfstream Airlines is preparing a
response to the $1.3 million fine imposed by the FAA after it found
the company over-scheduled pilots and violated other
regulations.
