P&W's JT8D Engine Turns Half A Century Old

Nearly 15,000 Have Been Built, 1,800 Still Flying

Pratt & Whitney's JT8D engine, an icon of aviation history, celebrates 50 years of dependable service this month, making it one of the most successful gas turbine engines in history. The JT8D engine entered service in 1964, and with approximately 1,800 engines still flying, Pratt & Whitney expects the engine to remain in service for another 10 to 15 years.

Mesa Air Group Pilots Denounce Local Television Station

Says News Story Misrepresented Mesa Pilots

Mesa Air Group pilots, represented by the Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l (ALPA), condemned a news story aired by Phoenix-based Fox affiliate KSAZ News 10 on February 6. The union called the story "sensationalized", saying it cited a number of inaccuracies, including one that asserts that no pilots were laid off during Mesa’s 2010 Chapter 11 bankruptcy and that a Mesa Airlines captain can earn $100,000, while proclaiming that “starting pay is modest.”

Region Represents 36 Percent Of The World's New Airplane Deliveries

Strong economic and passenger growth will be main drivers of new airplane demand in the Asia Pacific region, according to estimates released just ahead of the Singapore Air Show by Boeing. The planemaker thinks the region's airlines will need an additional 12,820 airplanes valued at $1.9 trillion, representing 36 percent of the world's new airplane deliveries over the next 20 years.
