The volatile question of whether to raise the mandatory
retirement age for airline pilots, from 60 to 65, gridlocked the
committee named by the FAA to investigate the matter.
The Transportation Security Adminstration will test a new
screening system at Sky Harbor International Airport in Phoenix, AZ
that has raised privacy concerns. The system, called backscatter,
takes X-rays of passenger's bodies to detect concealed explosives
and weapons.

Autopilot Autolands Aircraft For Incapacitated Crew
A new "uninterruptible" autopilot developed by Boeing and
patented in Canada purportedly flies and lands the aircraft in case
the crew is incapacitated.
According to a recent missive from NATCA, air traffic
controllers at the Atlanta Air Route Traffic Control Center (ZTL)
are experiencing a worsening technical problem with the radio
frequencies used to communicate with pilots in their airspace,
creating a 'maddening challenge that is steadily becoming a safety
issue.'
