Airborne 09.27.19: Airbus H145 Tops Andes, Continental's New Digs, Meyers 200 4 Sale

Airbus’ H145 has set its skids down on the Aconcagua, the highest mountain in the Southern Hemisphere, culminating at 22,840 feet. This is the first time a twin-engine helicopter has landed at this altitude. The conditions for this mission were extreme, due to the atmospheric conditions in the area and the winter season. The aircraft took off from Mendoza, Argentina, flew 30 minutes to the foot of the Aconcagua where it began its ascension. After 15 minutes of climbing, the helicopter landed at 1:45 p.m. local time on the summit, at a temperature of -22ºC. Registration for NASA Langley's Safeguard with Autonomous Navigation Demonstration (SAND) Challenge is now open. The SAND Challenge will be an opportunity for small businesses to compete in an autonomous unmanned aerial vehicle competition. The challenge will address some of the safety critical risks associated with flying unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) in the national airspace system such as flight outside of approved airspace, unsafe proximity to people or property, and critical system failure.

The follow-on spacecraft to VSS Unity is continuing to take shape at the Spaceship Factory in Mojave, CA.
