The vice president for technology for Rocky Mountain Unmanned Systems Jon McBride recently returned from Hawaii, but his trip was not exactly an exotic vacation. McBride has family on the island of Hawaii, where the Kilauea volcano has been erupting for several weeks. While McBride's family was not directly threatened by the lava flows, they did feel some of the impacts of the eruptions on the island... And while he was there, McBride used drones to help out researchers, first responders and city officials. Reliability Determined To Be 99.8 Percent

The SpaceDataHighway system – the world’s first ‘optical fiber in the sky’ based on cutting-edge laser technology – has achieved 10,000 successful laser connections. The reliability rate has reached 99.8 percent, and during the first one and a half years of routine operations these successful connections have downloaded more than 500 terabytes of data.

Will Fly Aboard The Parker Solar Probe Scheduled For Launch This Summer.

U.S. House Science, Space, and Technology Committee Chairman Lamar Smith (R-TX) has submitted the names of all committee members and staff to be placed aboard the Parker Solar Probe, a “mission to touch the Sun,” that will launch this summer. NASA opened to the public this spring an opportunity to submit names that will be stored on a memory card and installed on the probe before it launches.
