Aero Linx: Airpower Museum The Air Power Museum’s (APM) mission is to preserve our aviation heritage as well as educate both present and future generations about that heritage. The APM owns 30 acres on Antique Airfield, including the south half of the N-S runway. It consists of three hangars, an annex, and a library. The museum has 20,000 square feet of display and storage space, plus many spare engine and aircraft parts, both on display and being made available to AAA members to assist in their restoration. Pilot Reported That He Purchased The Airplane Earlier That Day

Analysis: The pilot reported that he purchased the airplane earlier that day and completed a condition inspection that afternoon. The previous owner suggested performing a couple of touch-and-go landings and some air work in preparation for the planned flight to the airplane’s home base. The pilot stated that the takeoff, climb, crosswind, and downwind legs of the traffic pattern were normal. While on the base-to-final turn, the airplane was high, and when the pilot reduced engine power, it developed a high sink rate. He did not correct the sink rate with additional power, and the airplane landed short of the runway.

Analysis: The pilot reported that this flight was conducted as part of phase 1 flight testing of the newly constructed experimental amateur-built airplane. The pilot stated that he had watched a video from the airplane kit manufacturer on “factory takeoff,” which suggested keeping the control stick slightly aft of neutral and applying partial power. During the accident takeoff, he tried the method described by the video and when the airplane lifted off, it was too slow. About 5ft above ground level, the airplane stalled, and the left wing dropped.
