AG Disapproves Aircraft Ban At Chatham Municipal Airport

Town’s Bylaw Inconsistent With State Law And Not Legal

The Massachusetts State Attorney General’s Office has overturned a bylaw passed by the town of Chatham which voted in its May 2025 annual meeting to pass Article 59 that sought to prohibit aircraft with wingspans larger than 49 feet from landing at Chatham Municipal Airport (KCQX). A letter from Assistant Attorney General Kelli E. Gunagan to Town Clerk Julie Smith stated that the bylaw was inconsistent with state law and therefore was disapproved.

North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) announced that U.S. military F-16 fighter aircraft intercepted a civilian aircraft on Saturday November 29 after it violated a temporary flight restriction airspace over Palm Beach, Florida. The aircraft entered the restricted airspace at 4:20 pm EST and the F-16s deployed flares to get the pilot’s attention and alert him to the violation, after which he was safely escorted from the airspace.
