Gone West: Tom Rogers

Well Known Avionics Installer and Expert

Tom Rogers, the owner of Avionics West, Tennessee, passed away October 5th, 2009. He was 60 years old.

Rogers was born in Kannapolis, North Carolina on May 14, 1949. On September 19, 1993 he was married to Nina Jean Reynolds, who survives.

Mr. Rogers had retired as the owner and operator of Avionics West Inc. in Santa Maria, California. He was a United States Navy Veteran of the Vietnam War. Mr. Rogers was a member of Hopewell Baptist Church. He was a disaster relief volunteer for Southern Baptist Convention, he did local missions work and he was active in Media Ministry at Hopewell Baptist Church. Mr. Rogers was also a HAM radio operator. He lived formerly in Kannapolis, North Carolina, Santa Maria, California and lived in Savannah, Tennessee for 5 years, where he opened Avionics West of Tennessee.

A close friend to Mr. Rogers tells ANN he took up ham radio and became an avid ham operator and weather forecaster. He was extremely active in emergency services and  preparedness, and served as an ‘Elmer’ to many other folks interested in the hobby. In the meantime, he continued to work on avionics issues, freely lending of his time and continuing as a contributor to the Cessna Pilot’s Association.

During one of his many volunteer trips to help the victims of Katrina, Tom contracted a fungal disease in his lungs. Over time, his condition worsened until he became a candidate for a lung transplant, but he was unable to receive the operation before he passed.

In addition to his wife, Nina of Savannah, Tennessee, he is survived by one daughter, Dawn Spry of Kannapolis, North Carolina,one son, Tommy Rogers of Concord, North Carolina, one stepdaughter, Kathi Lynne Pifer of Kingman, Arizona, one stepson, Douglas Foreman of Sutter Creek, California, 5 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.

Also surviving are his father, Billy Ray Rogers of Kannapolis, North Carolina, and one brother, Steve Rogers of China Grove, North Carolina.
