The Flight Training Security Program (FTSP) Was Initially Called The Alien Flight Student Program
Recently, the TSA published updated regulations for the flight training industry, effective this July. The Flight Training Security Program (FTSP), initially called the Alien Flight Student Program, was implemented by the TSA via an Interim Final Rule in 2004. Since that time, flight schools and flight instructors have been required to implement security awareness training, and non-U.S. citizens seeking flight instruction have been required to obtain special vetting and approval prior to initiating training.
Pilots Reportedly Underwhelmed By The WestJet Group Offer
WestJet Encore pilots have rejected the Tentative Agreement presented to them last month. The pilots were reportedly underwhelmed by the WestJet Group’s attempts at using compensation to gloss over many of the core structural issues of the operation. Of the 92 percent of eligible pilots who cast ballots, 53 percent voted against the agreement. This result reiterates that there is a deep-seated feeling that management fails to recognize the pilots’ needs beyond matters tied to compensation.
Schillen’s Military Career Stretched From 1963-87, Rising To The Rank Of Lieutenant Colonel
At 81, Nicholas Schillen, a U.S. Air Force veteran who completed his M.S. in Aeronautics through Liberty University Online Programs in December, is the oldest graduate among the 29,000-plus students in the Class of 2024. He and his wife drove from their home near Miami to Lynchburg, Va., so he could see the university for the first time, attend Liberty’s Military Graduate Recognition Ceremony on Thursday morning, and walk the stage at Thursday afternoon’s School of Aeronautics degree presentation ceremony.
Following the problems that occurred when a valve upended much-anticipated/much-delayed launch plans, preparations continue ahead of the agency’s Boeing Crew Flight Test launch to the ISS microgravity laboratory. NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams, still in quarantine ahead of the flight test, returned to Houston this weekend as work progresses on a valve replacement on the United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket Centaur upper stage.

Airplane Entered A Left Descending Turn Until The Left Wing Contacted The Ground
Analysis: The airplane was landing on the ultralight field when the accident occurred. The pilot stated that she made a wide base to final turn because she was unsure about the placement of the runway. Although the pilot added power, the airplane entered a left descending turn until the left wing contacted the ground near the beginning of the runway's displaced threshold.

While there has been some consideration, off and on, toward updating the nearly 5 pound book, the near implosion of the SportPlane and kit industry over the last decade has made such a pursuit an unwieldy one... until now.

After Years On The Ground, The DC-9-21 Was Flying This Weekend For $150 A Drop
With a nearly mythical rep, the once silent Perris SkyDive DC-9 is ALIVE! Following an initial test flight and a few practice landings that were flown by a flight crew that had to be brought in all the way from Florida, the California DZ put the DC9 back in service and made at least three jump runs on Saturday, taking about 60 jumpers per jump run to about 15K'. For years, the grand old bird, which entered service in 2006, sat forlorn and engine-less as the folks at SkyDive Perris slowly brought it back to life on a facility that is not normally known for jetliner restoration.

The AAIB has disclosed its findings after an accident befell an unmanned, remotely pilots test vehicle which suffered a forced landing following power unit failure, at the Cotswold Airport (Kemble), Gloucestershire on 9 August 2023. The report notes that, "The aircraft was being flown by a remote pilot on a test flight at 30 ft agl when a propeller blade detached from the electric propulsion unit 3 forward motor due to a failure of the adhesive bond between the propeller blade sheath and spar. Large out-of-balance loads generated by the blade release caused structural failure of the right inboard pylon, resulting in damage to the aircraft’s wiring harn

NOAA’s GOES-16 satellite captured activity at sunspot AR3664 that occurred around 2 p.m. EDT on May 9, 2024. NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) has issued a Geomagnetic Storm Warning for Friday, May 10. Additional solar eruptions could cause geomagnetic storm conditions to persist through the weekend.

He performed a forced landing on airport property, during which the airplane landed hard and sustained substantial damage. Postaccident examination of the engine revealed that the fuel filter b-nut fitting was not properly torqued, which likely introduced air into the fuel system.

Galactic 07 Mission Coming Up in June, Delta-Class Spaceships On Track for 2026, and Increased Ops Tempo Top News
Virgin Galactic just keeps crawling its way to profitability, with a 1st quarter results call that painted a company on the upswing with enough irons in the fire that things might just work out. Overall, Virgin Galactic said that its cash position remained strong, with $2 million in revenue driven by commercial spaceflight and membership fees tagged to future astronauts. That's pretty good, compared to last year's first quarter - that one ended with only $0.4 million in revenue, putting Virgin Galactic in the uncomfortable spot of burning cash just to stay alive.
General Atomics Begins Integrating Fancy Software Capabilities to MQ-9A
General Atomics Aeronautical Systems has embarked on a partnership with Shift5, allowing them to integrate that firm's "onboard onboard cyber anomaly detection and predictive maintenance capabilities" to USSOCOM's MQ-9A Reaper UAS. The Shift5 partnership will "assure AFSOC and SOCOM mission readiness and cyber survivability" by way of some nifty software. Shift5 is understandably vague about the specifics, merely saying that they give "real-time, data-driven insights needed to predict and schedule maintenance effectively, helping avoid critical failures before they happen and ensuring the safety and performance of critical fleets."
