U.K. Trade Unions Say New Prime Minister Should Back Heathrow Expansion

Decision May Come After Parliament Returns To Work Next Week

The largest trade unions in the U.K. have sent a letter to incoming British Prime Minister Theresa May urging her to support the expansion of Heathrow airport when Parliament reconvenes next week.

Buying Business Travel reports that unions BALPA, The URC, Unite, and Prospect sent the open letter calling on May to back the third runway at Heathrow as was recommended by the Airports commission, and announce "a clear and final decision to build a new third runway at Heathrow."

The letter says that failure to finalize a decision could delay the creation of 70,000 jobs associated with the airport expansion, and thousands more across the U.K.

“We’ve heard positive words about industrial strategy from the Prime Minister, but it’s action that counts," said TUC general secretary Frances O’Grady. "When Parliament returns, the Prime Minister should waste no time in announcing a clear and final decision to build a new runway at Heathrow."

The final decision whether to expand Heathrow or Gatwick has been delayed several times, and is now expected by the end of this year.
