Queensland, Australia Lifesavers Make Appeal To UAV Operators

Drone Was Flown Within 150 Feet Of Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter

Surf Life Saving Queensland in Australia took to Twitter to appeal to UAV operators who might be flying their aircraft at the beach or over the ocean.

"A #westpacrescue chopper had a near-miss with a drone at Burleigh today. UAV operators, please look out for us!" the Tweet said.

According to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), the unmanned aircraft was flying at the same altitude as the helicopter and came within about 150 feet of the manned aircraft. It was close enough that the helicopter crew viewed the proximity of the UAV as a danger to them.

David O'Brien, the safety manager for Surf Lifesaving Queensland, said UAVs operating near helicopters is "something we'd identified over the last little while as a sort of ongoing concern."

Hobbyists in Australia do not need a certificate to fly their UAVs, but the aircraft do come under the authority of CASA. The rules there require drones to stay at least 30 meters between other people and vehicles.
