Singapore Airlines Signs $1.7 Billion GE9X Services Agreement

Services To Be Provided For A 12-Year Period

Singapore Airlines signed a 12-year TrueChoice Flight Hour agreement with GE Aviation for the maintenance, repair and overhaul of its 45 GE9X engines that will power its Boeing 777-9 aircraft. The agreement is valued at more than $1.7 billion.

The announcement follows Singapore Airlines' February 2017 notice of intent to order 20 GE9X-powered Boeing 777-9 aircraft and five spare engines. The engine order is valued at more than $2 billion list price.

"Singapore Airlines and GE started working together in the 1980s when the airline began operating our CF6 engines, and our relationship has continued to strengthen over the last 30 years," said Jean Lydon-Rodgers, president and chief executive officer of GE Aviation's Services organization. "The TrueChoice agreement on the GE9X engines demonstrates Singapore Airlines' confidence in GE's comprehensive MRO support using OEM parts and workscopes, and we look forward to working closer with the airline on MRO efforts."

At the 2017 Paris Air Show, SIA Engineering Company Limited ("SIAEC") and GE Aviation agreed to establish a new engine overhaul joint venture based in Singapore. The joint venture will provide a full range of engine maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) services for the GE90 and GE9X engines. The GE90 engine exclusively powers the Boeing 777-300ER and 777-200LR, and the GE9X engine is the sole engine selection for the Boeing 777X aircraft.

In February 2016, Singapore Airlines and GE signed an extension to its OnPoint solution agreement for the maintenance, repair and overhaul of GE90-115B engines. Today, Singapore Airline operates 27 GE90-powered Boeing 777-300ER aircraft which have accumulated 2 million flight hours this year.

The TrueChoice suite of engine maintenance offerings incorporates an array of GE capabilities and customization across an engine's lifecycle.

The suite includes:

  • TrueChoice Flight Hour helps optimize cost of ownership over the engine lifecycle with flexible risk transfer and payment options.
  • TrueChoice Overhaul provides time and material overhauls with tailored workscopes specific to shop visit objectives, economic priorities and ownership horizon-for one engine or a fleet.
  • TrueChoice Material offers high-quality new and used OEM parts, advanced repairs and technology upgrades to enhance engine performance and support higher engine residual value.
  • TrueChoice Transitions includes a range of options for changing ownership horizons, such as green time leases, exchanges and material buy-back, plus customized workscopes with shorter builds and maximum used material. For lessors, GE offers products specifically designed to accommodate a change in owner or operator.

Each of the TrueChoice offerings is underpinned by GE Aviation's data and analytic capabilities and experience to help reduce maintenance burden and service disruptions for customers.

With almost 700 GE9X engines on order, the GE9X engine will be in the 100,000 pound thrust class and will have the largest front fan at 134 inches in diameter with a composite fan case and 16 fourth generation carbon fiber composite fan blades. Other key features include; a next-generation 27:1 pressure-ratio 11-stage high-pressure compressor; a third-generation TAPS III combustor for high efficiency and low emissions; and CMC material in the combustor and turbine.
