NC DOT Awards Grants To GA Airports

Funds Can Be Used For A Wide Range Of Projects

The NC Division of Aviation has awarded $9,639,270 for Vision 100 funds from the FAA to several general aviation airports across the state. Airports can use the funds for general airfield improvements, runway safety, runway extensions or even build a new terminal.

Since Gov. Bev Perdue (pictured) took office in 2009, the Division of Aviation has awarded more than $125 million in funding to state airports. These funds enable airports to provide access to education and job opportunities throughout the state. The Division of Aviation distributes the funding and manages projects for the 63 general aviation airports. Normal airport operational costs such as salaries, mowing equipment and supplies are not eligible for funding.

The Vision 100 program was established by the FAA in 2003 to allocate additional funds through the AIP process for GA airports. According to a 2005  AOPA Issues Brief "The Airport Planning and Development Grant funding levels of Vision 100 are a 23% increase over the previous legislation (AIR-21), which established a federal rule that authorizes a $150,000 annual AIP entitlement specifically for general aviation airports."

A total of 59 GA airports in North Carolina received grants of $150,000.
