First Airline Institutes Carry-On Bag Charges

Spirit Airlines Charges For Bags In Overhead Bins

We had to look at the date of this one to be sure the calendar hadn't been turned back a week. Passengers hoping to avoid baggage charges on Spirit Airline by carrying on their luggage will soon be charged for bags they carry on to the plane and stow in the overhead bins.

Airline officials call it a "bring less, pay less" policy it ways will ultimately benefit passengers.

CNN reports that the cost to the passenger will depend on whether they belong to Spirit's "ultra low fare" club, and if they "pre-reserve" a space for their carry-on bag in advance. The feels will range from $20-$45 per item.

Passengers will still be allowed to bring one personal item, such as a briefcase, backpack, purse, or laptop computer that will fit under the seat in front of them. They will also not be charged for diaper bags, cameras, or pet containers.

Spirit's new fee structure is effective for reservations made after April 5th for travel after August 1st. The airline flies primarily to destinations in the U.S., Caribbean, and Latin America.

Industry analysts do not know if other airlines will also start to charge for carry-on baggage. One called it a "very, very bold move," and said other airlines will be watching reaction very closely.
