NAFI Gears Up For AirVenture

Next To Convention HQ

The National Association of Flight Instructors (NAFI) has much planned this year for EAA AirVenture Oshkosh, centered at the NAFI Flight Instructor Headquarters tent. HQ will again be located just west of the Wearhouse on Knapp Street, adjacent to Convention Headquarters.

A popular attraction for the past several years has been the daily pre-flight contest, in which a new Cirrus aircraft is bugged with ten different squawks that render it unairworthy. Perform the preflight inspection (daily from 9 a.m.-12 noon), identify the bugs, and you could win, place or show. Daily prizes are awarded, plus a grand prize drawing will be held on Saturday afternoon. Participation is open to all aviation educators including CFIs, ultralight instructors, and ground instructors as well as all NAFI members.

In other planned activities, instructors can meet Marty Weaver, Master CFI, newly appointed head of the FAA’s Sport Pilot Division and a long-time NAFI member. Marty will spend extended periods at FIH to discuss the new regulations.

NAFI also plays a major part in the national General Aviation Awards and will be on stage when FAA Administrator Marion Blakey presents the awards at the Theater in the Woods on Friday evening.

In addition, several forums are scheduled throughout the week, including:

  • Tuesday, July 27, 10 a.m. in the Castrol Aviation Pavilion: "The Professional Flight Instructor," presented by JoAnn Hill and Sandy Hill.
  • Wednesday, July 28, 10 a.m. in the Honda Generator Pavilion: "Help! A Student is Suing Me for All I’m Worth!" presented by Bob Mackey and Rusty Sachs; and 4 p.m., in the GAMA Pavilion: "Eight Ways to Improve Your CFI Income," presented by Dorothy Schick and Rusty Sachs.
  • Thursday, July 29, 2:30 p.m. in the US Tools Pavilion: "True Confessions Revisited," presented by Doug Stewart, 2004 CFI of the Year
  • Sunday, August 1, 10 a.m. in the GAMA Pavilion: "Using Sport Pilot to Increase CFI Income," presented by Jack VanDeventer and Rusty Sachs.
