Illinois Group Hopes To Open Aviation Museum In Springfield

Aviation History Educational Center Would Be At Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport

A museum at Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport is the goal of a recently-formed group of aviation enthusiasts in Springfield, IL.

So far, the Aviation History Educational Center is just a dream and a short Word Press blog, but the people behind the project are serious about preserving Illinois' aviation history.

"The Aviation History Educational Center (AHEC) will address the future by presenting the story and history of aviation and aerospace. From these inspiring stories of tragedy and triumph we will grow dreams.

"Our Mission Statement is clear. Our purpose is 'to create a learning environment which will enhance the aviation experience for citizens of Central Illinois and beyond'." the steering committee says on the blog, adding that the Illinois Aviation Hall of Fame and the Military Aviation Hall of Fame of Illinois support the effort.

The Springfield State Journal-Register reports that the group hopes to begin with a display area in the airport's terminal, eventually growing to a "Hall of Fame", video screens, and displays of historical exhibits.

They also hope to acquire a simulator on a trailer that could be towed to schools and give students a taste of what it might be like to fly in space.

The group is actively soliciting donations for the project, and no timeline was given for its eventual opening.
