Plane Destroyed, Mechanic Hurt In Mysterious Explosion

Witness: "I Felt The Ground Moving Beneath Me"

A mysterious explosion rocked the Lafayette Regional Airport in Louisiana Tuesday, destroying a twin-engine aircraft and slightly injuring a mechanic. According to the Lafayette Advertiser, the aircraft, a Cessna 340, was severely damaged in the explosion, which happened in front of Paul Fornet Air Service at around 0900 local.

"It almost knocked me down," said Todd Patin at nearby Dallas Airmotive. He told the Advertiser, "I felt the ground moving beneath me."

Patin said he saw someone sitting in the aircraft shortly before the explosion. That same person, he said, was walking around, apparently injured. The man, identified only as a mechanic, was rushed to a local hospital. There's no immediate word on his condition.
