Delhi Civil Aviation Directorate Suspends Senior Pilot

"Broke All Navigation Rules" During A Scheduled Flight

We understand the need for proficiency training, but it's never a good idea to do so with paying passengers on the plane. A report from New Delhi in the Indian News Service IBN says that a senior Jet Airways pilot pulled a breaker at about 3,700 feet during an approach to Mumbai Airport on October 20th to "test the commanding pilot's capabilities." Pulling the breaker shut down all of the navigation equipment on the plane, including the ground proximity warning.

While the aircraft landed without incident, the Indian Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has suspended pilot certificate of the senior pilot, and has grounded the commander and co-pilot of the aircraft.

An initial investigation turned up a rate of descent of over 1000 fpm, which IBN reports is above the norm for the aircraft, which was not identified.

The DGCA has since issued strict instructions that indicate such "instruction" should not be performed with passengers on board.
