Officials Identify Pilot Lost In Monday F-18 Accident

Planes Were Practicing Dogfighting Maneuvers

Officials with the US Navy have identified the airman lost in Monday's midair training accident over Fort Hunter Liggett, CA.

First Lt. Brian R. Deforge, 25, of Plattsburgh, NY died in Monday's mid-air collision, Navy spokeswoman Lt. Sonja Hanson told the Associated Press.

Deforge was a graduate of the Naval Academy, but chose to go into the Marines Corps as a pilot, Hanson said. Both Navy and Marine Corps pilots train at Lemoore NAS, where the pilots were based.

We now know a few more details of the accident, as well. Deforge and an unidentified second pilot -- who received serious injuries after ejecting -- were practicing dogfighting maneuvers when their F/A-18s collided over the remote US Army Reserve base, about 150 miles south of San Francisco.

The second pilot was hospitalized following the accident, but has since been released.
