ASA Releases Drone Pilot Textbook

The Complete Remote Pilot Rounds all the Bases for the RPC

ASA's newest addition to their company library, the The Complete Remote Pilot, allows intro students to go from zero to hero in operating commercial drones.

The rapid pace of development of small commercial drones has brought out a new niche for enterprising operators, in everything from building inspection to low-cost aerial photography. As the industry grew, and small aircraft proliferated, regulations expanded too, providing plenty of study fodder for any would-be remote pilot. The simple, readable text walks students through all the requisite knowledge needed to pass the FAA Knowledge Exam for small uncrewed aircraft systems. Future remote pilots will be able to kick their career off as quickly and easily as possible, with info on the basics of drone flight, components and systems. Most importantly, the book covers the real meat and potatoes of modern aviation: Regulations! From airspace and navigation, on and off-airport operations, and radio procedures, remote pilot students will have a stress-free entry into the shared airspace of the American skies. The rest of the book covers terminology, navigation, weather, aerodynamics, performance, human factors, maintenance, preflight inspections, and emergency procedures.

The ultimate goal, of course, is the Remote Pilot Certificate-flavored FAA Knowledge Exam. Being the second edition of the text allows it to incorporate recent regulatory changes in 14 CFR Parts 89 and 107 for sUAS equipment. The new information includes sections on operating at night and over people; remote pilot knowledge, training, and certification; and remote identification of uncrewed aircraft. Now that the small drone industry has had some time to mature, ASA has been able to augment the text with small helpful tips, techniques, and mnemonic devices. Finally, the book includes a number of review questions for each chapter similar to those found on the test, a comprehensive glossary, and index. While not equivalent to more comprehensive test-prep and practice, the material should provide a handy starting point to guide student's personal study.
