Website Aims To Rally Support For American Airlines Workers

Transport Workers Union Launches Site As Lobbying Tool

Representatives of the Transport Workers Union, Local 514, have launched a website it hopes will rally support for unionized American Airlines workers by emphasizing how jobs could be affected by the airline's bankruptcy filing. The union says that to date, nearly 2,000 individuals have added their names to the list of supporters.

“We believe that this website ... and related efforts will help bring attention to the largest concentration of middle-class jobs in Oklahoma,” said Sam Cirri, president of Transport Workers Union, Local 514, which represents about 5,600 airline mechanics and related workers in Tulsa. “It’s critical that our elected officials and community leaders fight to keep these jobs local, instead of allowing this work to be reduced or outsourced overseas.”

The online pledge states that supporters will tell public officials, news media and community leaders that employees at American Airlines, American Eagle and all workers dependent on these airlines must be treated fairly. They are pledging their support for no attacks on pension funds and no outsourcing of good-paying American jobs. Any person interested in supporting the pledge can visit the website to submit their name and view the list of people who have already signed the pledge.
