Florida Pilot Fatally Injured Enroute To Oshkosh

RV-4 Went Down In Polk County, GA

A Nassau County, FL man was fatally injured Friday when the Vans RV-4 (similar aircraft pictured in file photo) he was flying to the EAA fly-in in Oshkosh, WI, went down in Polk County, GA.

The Florida Times-Union in Jacksonville reports that the pilot was 67-year-old Ronald Murphy. He had departed for Oshkosh early Friday morning, and the plane experienced mechanical difficulties near the Alabama state line.

The plane went down in a rural area about 70 miles north of Atlanta. Murphy was the only one on board the airplane when it went down, according to FAA spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen.

Murphy was a retired electrician. He was going to Oshkosh for the first time, according to his son Jason. The accident remains under investigation.
