Aero-News Featured Aero-Casts For Wednesday 09.06.06

Tom Turner's Aero-Craft 101: Learning The Lessons Of Comair Flight 5191

A tragic set of circumstances led to the crash of Comair 5191 at Lexington, KY last month. It will be some time before the investigation determines exactly what happened, if the full truth is ever known.

A crash such as this -- an early-morning departure that began a takeoff roll on the wrong runway, one that was unlighted and far too short for the jet to lift off -- Nope, generates a lot of speculation, consideration of the "what ifs?" of the doomed flight.

It would be wrong to randomly pick a specific scenario and call it the cause of this crash at this point. The speculation does, however, bring up ideas of what might cause similar events.

It forces us to think about what might happen to future aircraft, and more importantly what we can do to avoid those circumstances -- as Master CFI Tom Turner tells us in today's Aero-Craft segment.

This feature is in addition to our daily news briefing -- available in either a quick "Touch And Go" format, or an expanded Aero-Briefing -- where you'll hear these stories:

Boeing says goodbye to Alan Mulally...

President Bush nominates Mary Peters to head up the DOT...

And could an $18,000 runway awareness system have saved the lives of those on board Comair Flight 5191?

...And more

  • ANN's Daily Briefing Aero-Cast: The Daily ANN Report (ANNRep for short), is a more comprehensive look at the day's news. We give you the whole buzz... the news and features that occupy the forefront of aviation news as well as solid background on the subjects that aviators and other aviation professionals need to stay informed on.
  • ANN's Daily 'ASR' Feature Aero-Cast: Our daily 'Aero-News Special Report' involves a more in-depth view of a story or two that dominated (or will be dominating) the day's news.
