C-130 Down In Chad, Five Lost

Gov't Disputes Rebels' Shootdown Claim

It was a night landing at an unlit airstrip... and it apparently went very wrong for the crew aboard a C-130 Sunday.

The aircraft, flying for the government in Chad, crashed on approach to the field. Five of those on board were killed, although both flight crew members survived.

The Associated Press reports the plane was on its way from the capital of N'djamena, and was trying to land at the airport in Abeche despite a lack of lighting on the runway.

Rebels trying to overthrow President Idress Deby claimed on their website Monday that they shot the Hercules out of the sky with a surface-to-air missile, although the government says that isn't so.

A civil war has been raging in Chad since October.
