Vans RV-7A Pilot Fatally Injured In New Jersey

Authorities Say Wreckage Was Strewn Over A Wide Area

A Vans RV-7A went down in New Jersey Friday about three miles from Atlantic City International Airport resulting in the fatal injury of the pilot, the only person on board the airplane.

The pilot was identified as 44-year-old Anthony Kelly, according to a report appearing on Philadelphia television station WCAU. The NTSB said that Kelly was not the builder of the Vans. Kelly had been an air traffic controller for over 10 years.

The RV-7A is the tricycle-gear version of the airplane. The wreckage of the airplane was reportedly strewn over wooded area. The horizontal stabilizer was found approximately a mile from the main wreckage.

The accident occurred at about 1700 EDT Friday. A witness said she heard the sound of a low-flying airplane, and then sirens in the area.

A study last year by the NTSB indicates that while experimental aircraft make up 10% of the overall fleet of GA airplanes, they account for 15% of all accidents and 21% of fatal accidents.
