Thai Government Is Serious About Drone Registration

Failure To Do So Could Result In Five Years In Prison

Drone regulations in Thailand are similar in some respects to those put in place by other countries. They include altitude restrictions, insurance requirements, and a prohibition against flying in some areas like near government buildings.

But they are serious about their registration requirement. Failure to register a personal drone in Thailand is punishable by a fine of about $3,100 or up to five years in prison.

The Diplomat reports that the National Broadcast and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) of Thailand estimates there were some 50,000 drones in private hands in the country, but only about 350 of them are registered with the government when new regulations were imposed last year. There was a deadline of January 9, 2018 to register private drones.

The Thai government sent out reminders through media outlets about the registration deadline, and as of Tuesday, the NBTC said that 8,391 people had registered their drones. That number is expected to rise as more recent registrations are included.
