El Al Pilot Returns To Gate For Cancer Patient

An 11-Year-Old Girl Almost Missed Her Flight To Camp

A young Israeli girl battling cancer was all set for a trip from her home in Rehovot to Glen Spey, NY, to attend a special camp for cancer patients ... but she almost didn't get to go.

After boarding, the flight attendants could not locate Inbar Chomsky's passport, despite an extensive search of the airplane and the airport by flight attendants and ground crews. With their departure rapidly approaching, the pilot informed the girl that she would not be able to fly.

Yahoo News relays a report from the Times of Israel that said as the plane was taxiing to the runway, the missing passport was located in the backpack of another camper. The pilot contacted the tower and ground controllers to see if he could turn around and pick up Chomsky, who was devastated about missing the trip.

The negotiations took about 30 minutes. The pilot returned to the gate, and Inbar was allowed to board.

In a statement to the paper, El Al said it was very rare for a plane to be allowed to return to the gate, but in this case the airline was "honored an proud" to be able to make the girls dream of attending the camp in the U.S. come true.
