Would-Be Program Ends in Disappointment for Homegrown Manufacturer
The Multi-Mission Aircraft would have consisted of a Bombardier Global 6500, overhauled with the assistance of General Dynamics Mission Systems-Canada to provision missile pylons, electronic warfare equipment, and an interior ordnance bay.
Unfortunately for Bombardier, Canada has decided not to go ahead with the aircraft, leaving the would-be model on the shelf until another customer desides to procure it.
"Despite multiple conversations with the government, where we requested an RFP or a more detailed framework," said Bombardier, " no such follow-on opportunities were given" to the company or its partners. Furthermore, "no aerospace or third-party experts subsequently evaluated our capabilities." Unfortunately for Canada, the stillborn program eliminates 22,000 would-be jobs from the economy there.
Bombardier put on a happy face, though, saying that they believe the Multi-Mission Aircraft would be able to find a buyer elsewhere. "There is still a bright future for maritime surveillance platforms that Bombardier is ready, willing and able to offer Canada and the rest of the world." More attractive for cash-strapped governments around the world, the aircraft will be "less expensive to acquire, less expensive to operate", and save "approximately 30% on operating costs." In classic corporate fashion, Bombardier paid the eco toll by noting it cuts carbon emissions by 40% compared to similar mission airframes.
"All in all, we can all be proud of the next-generation solution we were poised to deliver. We are confident that our product offering will be successful in multiple markets, setting a new standard for maritime patrol. Bombardier Defense has built a successful reputation as the most flexible partner for countries around the world and we look forward to sharing more successes on this front.
