Superior Expands Millennium Cylinder Recall

Manufacturer Adds 1000 To Number Of Affected Assemblies

Superior Air Parts has added 1000 to the number of cylinder assemblies affected by the recall first announced in a September service bulletin.

The company says cylinder barrels from assemblies identified by Service Bulletin B06-01 D weren't properly hardened to specification which could result in fatigue cracking of the cylinder head.

Superior fears propagating cracks may lead to head and/or barrel separation and loss of power in flight. SB B06-01 D requires the removal of the affected assemblies manufactured between April and November 2005.

According to the SB, affected cylinders must be replaced before reaching 150 hours time in service (TIS). If an affected cylinder has exceeded 150 hours TIS then it must be replaced within ten hours.

The SB lists affected engines as follows:

Teledyne Continental Motors Engines:

  • O-470-G, -K, -L, -M, -P, -R, -S, -U; IO-470-C, -D, -E, -F,-G,-H, -L, -M, -N, -P, -R, -S, -U, -V
  • IO-520-A, -B, -BA, -C, -D, -E, -F, -J, -K, -L, -M, -BB, -CB, -MB
  • TSIO-520-AF, -B, -BB, -C, -CE, -D, -DB, -E, -EB, -G, -H, -J, -JB, -K, -KB, -L, -LB, -M, -N, -NB, -P, -R, -T, UB, -VB, -WB
  • IO-550-A, -B, -C, -D, -E, -F, -L

Textron Lycoming Engines:

  • O-320-A, -B, -C, -D, -E, -H; IO-320-B, -D, -E; LIO-320-B; AIO-320-A, -B, -C; AEIO-320-D, -E
  • O-360-A, -B, -C, -D, -F, -G, -J; IO-360-B, -L, -M; LO-360-A; AEIO-360-B, -H; HO-360-C; HIO-360-B
  • O-540-A, -B, -E, -F, -G, -H, -J; IO-540-A, -C, -D, -N, -T, -V, -W; AEIO-540-D

The SB lists part numbers for affected assemblies which owners and mechanics may cross-check against suspect cylinders installed on an aircraft. The photo below shows where to find the part number on Millennium cylinders.

Under the terms of the Service Bulletin, Superior has agreed to reimburse owners for labor as follows:

For the first cylinder change on either side:

  • O/IO-470 IO-520/550 – 6 hours
  • TSIO-520 – 8 hours
  • O/IO-320/360 – 6 hours
  • O/IO-540 – 6 hours

For the second or third cylinder change on same side add:

  • O/IO-470 IO-520/550 – 4 hours
  • TSIO-520 – 5 hours
  • O/IO-320/360 – 3 hours
  • O/IO-540 – 3 hours

Superior says costs for new cylinders will be handled according to the company's warranty policy. The SB lists email addresses and phone numbers to get your questions answered.
