Intel Shooting Star Mini Designed For Indoor Shows

But No Public Sales Are Planned By The Company

Remember the drone light show presented at the Super Bowl last year? Though pre-taped (an FAA TFR prevented the show from being presented live), it was pretty impressive. The show was executed by Intel Shooting Star drones, and in a keynote address at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the company said it has developed a variant of the swarm drone that is safe for indoor use.

But unfortunately, you can't buy one.

The "Shooting Star Mini" can locate itself in space without using a GPS, according to the company. The Verge reports that during the keynote, a swarm of the small drones performed in the arena, dancing to Kygo's "Stargazing". But Intel CEO Brian Krzanich said that the drone won't be offered for sale to the public. They are intended for use by presentation companies that want to put on impressive indoor light shows.

The aircraft follow a preprogrammed routine and do not need to be controlled individually. A single operator can fly up to 100 of the small drones at a time, according to the company.

So while you probably won't be able to go out and buy a swarm of 100 tiny drones anytime soon, they are expected to be a common sight at major presentations in the future.
