Transport Canada has announced temporary provisions for the renewal of medical certificates permitting the use of virtual visits...

Government documents note that the program has resulted from the need, "... to adopt measures in the public interest to reduce the immediate and longer-term regulatory demand on healthcare resources in Canada following the declaration of a pandemic outbreak of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) by the World Health Organization on March 11, 2020 and reduce the unnecessary exposure of healthy medical certificate holders to potentially hazardous healthcare settings. More specifically, this exemption will allow holders of medical certificates Category 1, 2, or 3 with a validity period ending between March 17, 2020 and March 31, 2021 to renew their certificate by attestation of fitness or via telemedicine consultation, subject to the conditions set out below." Yet another Icon A5 amphibian has played submarine... According to a recent NTSB Preliminary report, on June 3, 2020, about 1640 central daylight time, an ICON A5 amphibian airplane, N838BA, was substantially damaged. According to the pilot, he taxied on the water for takeoff. When facing into the wind, he applied full power and after about 5 seconds heard a huge bang. He shut down the engine, climbed out, looked back, and saw all 3 propeller blades were missing. At this point, the airplane started to sink. He and his passenger donned life jackets and evacuated the airplane. Following negotiation with the city of Lakeland, the non-profit Sun' n Fun organization will get a waiver of rent payments that will cover about a year's worth of payments for the fees normally paid for the use of the Sun 'n Fun campus. Following extensive damage created by the COVID-19 pandemic and the cancellation of this year's event, the City Commission will waive $330,397 that would have otherwise been due to Lakeland Linder International Airport. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
