Alaskan Floatplane Pilot Rescues Dog

Canine Was Struggling In A Waterway Near Ketchikan International Airport

A pilot who had just landed his floatplane in Ketchikan, AK noticed a dog struggling in the water in the channel between the Ketchikan International Airport ferry dock and the floatplane dock for Taquan Air.

Pilot Mike Hudgins told the Ketchikan Daily News that he had just returned from a sightseeing flight with a family on board when he saw the miniature sheltie dog in the water. He said the dog was about 40 yards ahead of the airplane when he spotted her.

Hudgins called out to the dog, who turned away. He then cut the engine and jumped out onto the float, much to the surprise of the passengers, he told the paper. He eventually got close enough to the dog to pull her aboard the airplane.

It turns out the dog is named Misty, and she belongs to Sean and Angela Inlow, who had had an ID chip implanted in the dog. The Inlows had been out on their boat with Misty, and she "must have fallen out" of the boat, Sean Inlow told the paper. They had been searching for the dog for several hours.

A vet checkout out Misty at the dock, and pronounced her tired, but healthy. She did not suffer from hypothermia from her exposure to the cold water.

Inlow said he plans to buy a life vest for Misty before future boat trips.
