Northrop Grumman Sponsors American Air Museum Teacher Residency Program

Teachers Learn about WWII History At IWM Duxford

Northrop Grumman Corporation is sponsoring the American Air Museum Summer Residency Program 2014 as part of the company's global education activities to inspire and encourage interest in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).  The American Air Museum Summer Residency Program is a professional development initiative involving teachers brought together from the United States and the United Kingdom with the aim of stimulating an interest in STEM subjects, particularly in the context of the history of World War II. The residency is run by Imperial War Museum Duxford in the U.K. and will take place from July 31 to Aug. 14, 2014.

"Inspiring the young scientists, engineers and mathematicians of tomorrow is important for Northrop Grumman and the success of our industry," said Andrew Tyler, Chief Executive Europe, Northrop Grumman. "This program provides a unique opportunity for students and teachers to understand the role of engineering and technology within the historical context of the Second World War."

During the residency, teachers learn in a collaborative environment about World War II history and the key contributions made by engineering and technology. They will hear from museum professionals and also from veterans who have experienced war and conflict, giving teachers a deeper understanding of World War II history with a special emphasis on aerial conflict, and the important role of engineering and technology. Using the information that they have gathered, teachers will then work in partnership to create a learning curriculum and activities that will be tested with local students in a summer camp environment at IWM Duxford.

IWM Duxford is Britain's best-preserved World War II airfield and Europe's premier aviation museum, where historic buildings intersperse with state-of-the-art exhibition halls, including the American Air Museum. The museum is the only facility of its kind outside the U.S. that commemorates and highlights the special bond between the U.S. and the U.K.
