Launching This Week: First 5G Enabled Drone Racing Program

T-Mobile And The Drone Racing League Team Up On The Project

T-Mobile and The Drone Racing League launched their first 5G enabled Drone. This is one of the first racing drones in the world to have the 5G embedded and capable of live-streaming video directly to the internet. Via T-Mobile’s 5G Network, the drone will be able to stream high definition, first person view footage live.

Baseball fans at the MLB Field of Dreams Thursday night in Dyersville, Iowa will be getting a first glimpse of this drone as it goes behind-the-scenes, across the cornfields to the movie set and original ballfield, then onto the MLB field where the game will be played.
 
“The Drone Racing League is a perfect case study for showcasing the benefits of T-Mobile 5G wireless technology with our high-speed racing drones. Our fans love innovation and discovering how new technology is developed, and we know our 5G-enabled drone will get them excited about new ways they will be able to experience the immersive thrill of professional drone racing,” said DRL President Rachel Jacobson.
 
The new drone is set to redefine the sports entertainment experience for fans streaming at home by providing crisp video, and will make its way around the course before each event in the DRL’s 2021-2022 season.
 
The drone has a dual FPV and HD streaming camera system, 5s lipo battery setup for longer flight time, and over 2,400g of thrust, enabling it to film content through mile-long courses at speeds of over 60 MPH.
 
DRL Pilots currently fly via analog radio transmissions for lower latency which sacrifices crisp quality footage. As technical development of the drone advances, pilots abilities will be enhanced. Additionally, this gives fans at home the experience that they are flying the drone in real time.
