Greenville To See WWII B-25 Mitchell Land Once Again

Will Be Part Of The Wings Of Freedom Tour Coming Later This Month

The North American B-25 Mitchell "Tondelayo" will be part of this year’s Wings of Freedom Tour of WWII Vintage Aircraft, which will be on display at South Carolina's Greenville Downtown Airport October 21-23.

Along with the B-25 will be Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress “Nine O Nine", Consolidated B-24 Liberator “Witchcraft," and P-51 Mustang "Toulouse Nuts" fighter. They are all part of the Collings Foundation's "Wings of Freedom Tour" that is visiting 110 cities nationwide this year.

“Many years ago, it was common to see B-25s flying over Greenville. That was in the 1940’s during WWII when Greenville Army Air Base, later renamed Donaldson Air Force Base, was used for B-25 aircraft training,” stated Joe Frasher, Greenville Downtown Airport’s Director.

Also on display will be the following Military History Center of the Carolinas equipment from the WWII era: Halftrack, Jeep, WC-55, GPA, Equipment, Cletrac and other memorabilia; and at their future location, on the same street as the event, they will have post WWII era vehicles like a 5 Ton and a M38A1, as well as other items that you can view for at no charge.

This is a rare opportunity to visit, explore, and learn more about these unique and rare treasures of history. The B-17 is one of only eight in flying condition in the United States. The B-24J is the sole remaining example of its type flying in the World. The B-25 is best known for being used in the daring Doolittle raid and the P-51 "Toulouse Nuts" recently received the 2016 Oshkosh Grand Champion Award for restoration.

The Wings of Freedom Tour will arrive at Greenville Downtown Airport at 2:00 PM on October 21 and will be on display at Runway Cafe at Greenville Downtown Airport until the aircraft departs October 23 after 4:30 PM. Hours of ground tours and display are: 2:00 PM through 4:30 PM on Friday, October 21; 9:00 AM through 4:30 PM on Saturday, October 22; 9:00 AM through 4:30 PM on Sunday, October 23. The 30-minute flight experiences are normally scheduled before and after the ground tour times above.
