Spitfire Down At Biggin Hill Airport In The U.K.

Pilot Hospitalized, Aircraft 'Badly Damaged'

One of the 31 airworthy examples of a Supermarine Spitfire went down after suffering a loss of power on takeoff from Biggin Hill airport near London, England  on Saturday, badly damaging the aircraft and sending the pilot to the hospital with a shoulder injury.

The U.K. newspaper The Daily Mail reports that pilot Dan Griffiths managed to make a "textbook" emergency landing after losing all power seconds after takeoff. He is being described as a "hero" for his ability to land the aircraft without causing a "catastrophic amount of damage."

Local authorities say that Griffiths landed the airplane in the grass on airport grounds. He was transported to King's College Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

As for the airplane, identified as Spitfire MK912, its owners say "it will fly again."

The accident is under investigation by the U.K. AAIB.
