Canadian Owners and Pilots Association Awards 2023 Volunteer Awards

Rob Jaap of Sylvan Lake, Alberta Recognized for Aviation Service

This year’s COPA Volunteer Awards have been published, recognizing pilots’ hard work in helping to foster a culture of aviation while going “above and beyond to advance, promote and preserve the Canadian Freedom to Fly in their local communities.”

The winner of the President’s Award is Rob Jaap, of Sylvan Lake, Alberta. The straight-tail Cessna pilot spends his time backcountry flying and leading the Innisfail Flying Club. The COPA award cites Jaap’s actions over the preceding two years, where he “spearheaded a small group of aviators and volunteers to run a survival weekend dubbed That Night in the Woods." The overnight simulated survival scenario provides a helpful, safe, proving ground for aviators and their survival equipment.

A series of Director’s awards and COPA Appreciation Awards were also granted, recognizing people and groups who support the COPA mission.
