'The-Jet' No More: Cirrus Names Its Single-Engine Wonder

Say Hello To The "Cirrus Vision SJ50"

Since Cirrus Design Corporation first announced its plans for a single-engine turbofan aircraft -- billed mysteriously from the start as simply "The-Jet" -- people have wondered what the company would wind up really calling it. After all, "The-Jet" could lead to some interesting exchanges with ATC...

"Albuquerque Clearance Delivery, Cirrus "The-Jet" 280CJ requests IFR clearance to Duluth."

"The jet calling Clearance, say type again."

"280CJ is "The-Jet."

"Not your N-number, aircraft calling Clearance, your type."

"I'm "The-Jet." ...You get the idea.

Well, the wait is over. The company announced Thursday "The-Jet" will now be known as the "Cirrus Vision SJ50," a name meant to convey its -- well, vision -- for the single-engine turbofan segment. (The name also ties in well with the recently-announced "Cirrus Perspective," an SR22 G3 bedecked with a jaw-dropping Garmin glass panel.)

"The name 'Cirrus Vision SJ50' represents a natural extension of Cirrus’ vision to build the ultimate personal transportation machine," said Cirrus CEO, Alan Klapmeier. "With the Cirrus Vision we are providing an entirely new transportation option for personal and business travel. It is a smarter, simpler and more efficient way to travel and holds the unique promise of redefining general aviation."

As ANN reported in Real-Time, the Cirrus Vision made its first flight last week. The 45-minute flight was conducted from company worldwide headquarters at the Duluth International Airport, and Cirrus says the aircraft performed flawlessly.

Cirrus tipped its hand somewhat with "The-Jet's" name. The first, non-conforming prototype aircraft is listed on the FAA registry as the "Cirrus SJX."
