Nine Fatally Injured In Skydiving Aircraft Accident In Sweden

Were Aboard A GippsAero GA8 Airvan

A GippsAero GA8 Airvan on a skydiving flight went down Monday on Storsandskar Island in the Ume river outside Umea, Sweden, resulting in the fatal injury of all nine people on board.

Fox News reports that the plane went down at about 2 p.m. local time shortly after takeoff from Umea Airport in the northern part of the country. According to Swiss media, a witness said several of the skydivers were seen attempting to exit the plane before it impacted terrain.

Witness Peter Larsson told the Dagens Nyheter newspaper that he heard a "weird sound" that didn't seem normal, and then looked up to observe the plane "spinning like a top." He said he initially thought the plane was performing aerobatics but "quickly realized that something was wrong."

All those on board were Swedish, according to the BBC.

In a statement to Swedish news agency TT, Prime Minister Stefan Lofven sent condolences to the families of those on board, and said that the government would maintain close contact with officials investigating the accident.
