Russia Suspends 737 Type Certificate

Says FAA Has Not Documented That The Boeing Workhorse Meets Russian Safety Standards

Russia has suspended the type certificate for the Boeing 737, saying the FAA has ensured that the Boeing workhorse airplane meets Russian safety standards.

The Interstate Aviation Committee (IAC), which oversees civil aviation within the Commonwealth of Independent Countries, made the unexpected move Friday, according to AeroTime.aero. The order applies to both classic and NextGen models of the airplane.

The IAC sent a letter to the head of Rosaviation, the Russian Civil Aviation Authority, saying that there has been an official request made to the FAA to provide information that the 737s elevators meet fail-safe requirements. The IAC said that the FAA has not provided any data to ensure that, if an elevator were to fail, it would not lead to a catastrophic failure of the airplane.

Neither Boeing nor the FAA provided any specific comment on the issue. Rosaviation has to make the final decision, and was expected to meet on the issue Friday.
