FAA Seeks Public Comment On NPS Air Tour Management Act

Requires Reporting Of Hours Spent Flying Over National Parks

The FAA is seeking comments from the public concerning the National Parks Air Tour Management Act (NPATMA) of 2000 to determine whether it should continue to collect the data required under the act.

The FAA Modernization and Reform Act of 2012 included amendments to the NPATMA of 2000. One of these amendments required commercial air tour operators conducting tours over national park units to report on the number of operations they conduct and any such other information prescribed by the FAA Administrator and the Director of the National Park Service (NPS).

Approximately 75 air tour operators provide the information, which is collected quarterly, or annually for park units with 50 or fewer tours per year.

The FAA is seeking comments on any aspect of this information collection, including:

  • whether the proposed collection of information is necessary for FAA's performance
  • the accuracy of the estimated burden
  • ways for FAA to enhance the quality, utility and clarity of the information collection;
  • ways that the burden could be minimized without reducing the quality of the collected information.

The agency will summarize and/or include public comments in the request for OMB's clearance of this information collection.
