Tom Reilly of Douglas, Georgia, whose prowess as both an airman and a restorer of historic aircraft are lauded within the warbirds community, will be inducted into the EAA Warbirds of America Hall of Fame on 10 November 2022 in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Reilly is one of five individuals to be honored that evening with various Experimental Aircraft Association halls of fame inductions.

On 30 September 2022, Robinson Helicopter received FAA certification for the Night Vision Goggle (NVG) compatible configuration of its R66 police helicopter. Such certification is predicated upon evaluation of the helicopter’s interior and exterior lighting, as well as its instruments and avionics—all of which must be deemed conducive to day or night flight operations with or without the use of night vision goggles.

In May 2022 Surack Enterprises purchased storied helicopter marque Enstrom with the near-term aims of restarting parts and eventually helicopter production, and a longer-term objective of improving and updating the Enstrom fleet. Company owner, Chuck Surack, earned his venture capital by starting Sweetwater Sound, one of the world’s largest online retailers of musical instruments and equipment. On September 17, 2022, about 1847 eastern daylight time, an experimental amateur built Titan Tornado II airplane, N709RD, was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident in Citra, Florida. The pilot and passenger were fatally injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight. On the day of the accident, the pilot and passenger departed Patch O Blue Airport (FD02), Orange Springs, Florida about 1835.

Emergency Airworthiness Directive (AD) 2022-21-51 is sent to owners and operators of Viking Air Limited (type certificate previously held by Bombardier Inc. and de Havilland, Inc.) Model DHC-3 airplanes. This Emergency AD was prompted by multiple recent reports of cracks in the left-hand elevator auxiliary spar. ICAO Three-Letter Designator (3LD) An ICAO 3LD is an exclusive designator that, when used together with a flight number, becomes the aircraft call sign and provides distinct aircraft identification to air traffic control (ATC). ICAO approves 3LDs to enhance the safety and security of the air traffic system. An ICAO 3LD may be assigned to a company, agency, or organization and is used instead of the aircraft registration number for ATC operational and security purposes. An ICAO 3LD is also used for aircraft identification in the flight plan and associated messages and can be used for domestic and international flights.
