Community College Aircraft Maintenance Program Closed After FAA Inspection

Issues With Record-Keeping Discovered By The Agency

The Academy at Shawnee's Aviation Maintenance Technology program has been temporarily shut down following an FAA inspection which turned up issues with record-keeping. The program coordinator has been removed by the Jefferson Community and Technical College and Jefferson County (KY) Public Schools, but he is still considered an employee of the school system.

JCTC spokeswoman Lisa Brosky told the Louisville (KY) Courier-Journal that that the problems appear to be human error rather than deliberate fraud. The program was closed for about a year in 2002 when it was discovered that students were given credit for work that had not been completed.

Brosky said the school voluntarily suspended the program after the FAA inspection turned up discrepancies like unsigned student forms, or finding that students had not used the correct form to document their work. She said the time will be used to "evaluate everything" in a "good program" that "could be better."

Brosky said the school hopes to re-open January 10th. She also said that there is a possibility that the spring semester could be extended so that students enrolled in the program can complete their course work, but no decision has been made. The school wants to avoid having students repeat work because of the administrative problem.
