Dense Fog Reported In The Area, Three Fatally Injured
A Cessna 310 that had departed from Fort Pierce in southeast Florida headed for Jacksonville Executive at Craig Airport (KCRG) went down in a residential area near the Jacksonville airport Sunday night resulting in the fatal injury of three people on board.
The accident occurred Sunday evening about 1820 EST, according to a report from the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office. The plane went down in a residential subdivision near that airport, impacting a pond and missing the surrounding houses. The Florida Times-Union reports that two occupants, a man and a woman, were recovered immediately from the wreckage, and the remains of a second woman were later found by divers in the pond.
Radio station WOKV reports that the three on board the airplane were the pilot, 60-year-old Michael Huber, and his two daughters; 20-year-old Tess and 17-year-old Abagail. Tess Huber was a member of the University of North Florida golf team. The university is located in Jacksonville. She was reportedly working towards obtaining her pilot certificate.
There was fog in the area Sunday night. Melissa Bujedea, a spokeswoman for the Sheriff's Office, would not speculate as to whether the fog was a factor in the accident.
Bujeda said that airport officials indicated that the pilot was instructed by air traffic controllers to go around after reporting the runway was not in sight. The plane apparently went down during the missed approach procedure.
The Cessna departed St. Lucie County International Airport in southeast Florida about 1717 EST, according to Flight Aware.
